We had the pleasure of checking out The August Jack a couple of weeks ago, and wow, what a treat it was! August Jack specializes in pairing craft beer with fantastic tapas prepared by Chef Curtis. Go ahead and look at their MENU, when was the last time you saw any restaurant list specific craft beers to pair with each individual food item? I can't say I've ever seen it in YVR/Canada. This is a huge step in the right direction and I wish more places would adopt this method. On to the food!
1st - 'Seasonal Greens' - paired with a Parallel 49 Watermelon Wit. Honestly I've never been a huge fan of this beer, but I've also never had it with a salad containing Mizuna & Mustard Greens, Chocolate Balsamic Vinaigrette (amazing), Grilled Pear, Tiger Blue Crumble, and Roasted Hazelnut. Wow! Some beers just go better with food. Some beers just go well with, salad? Doubt you'll hear me say that very often.
2nd - 'Rare Seared Albacore Tuna' - Ok disclaimer, I lived in Asia for a couple of years so I'm a bit of a tuna snob. I've yet to have great tuna in Vancouver. That said, this was one of the best seared tuna's I've had in quite awhile. Most places here cook it too long, this was pretty bang on for me. Best supporting actor goes to the Cippolini Onions. Holy crap those things are addicting! Paired with 33 Acres West Coast Ocean Pale Ale, game changer. If you haven't checked out 33 Acres yet give them a look, they're doing amazing things just off Main and 8th.
3rd - 'Smoked Pork Loin' - Mustard Grain Rub, Whiskey Barrel Smoke, Leek & Barley Risotto, Maple Cream Reduction, Organic Vegetables. Seriously. Flavor. Perhaps a tad salty (but that's not such a bad thing with beer) overall this was a great complex dish. My only regret is that I had to share it with Nick/@VancityBeerguy. Anytime a restaurant suggests pairing a main dish with an Imperial IPA is a good time in my books. This was paired with a Hurricane IPA from Storm on tap.
4th - 'Duo of Creme Brulee' - Yes, I said Duo. As in two spectacular versions of creme brulee. Vanilla Bourbon, and Lavender Milk Chocolate, with a Brandy Snap Wafer. I got lost at bourbon. What?! Bourbon creme brulee? Wow, you all must order this if you're at August Jack. Oh ya, and they paired it with a Lambic! First time I've seen that anywhere, and it's fantastic! We had the Mort Subite Framboise. Spectacular meal!
These guys are doing great things, and they're doing great things with craft beer. That's a win win in our books. Cheers!
